An angel and a vampire… an unlikely mix but a great story!

TITLE = ETERNAL: Zachary’s story

AUTHOR = CYNTHIA LEITICH SMITH

ILLUSTRATOR = MING DOYLE

GENRE = SUPERNATURAL, FANTASY, ANGELS, VAMPIRES

INTEREST LEVEL = YEARS 9, 10

Once again, Cynthia Leitich Smith has taken an interesting approach when turning her original novel into a graphic novel. Originally, “Eternal” had 2 narrators (Zachary – the angel; and Miranda – the vampire) but in this graphic novel, the story is told solely by Zachary – which works very effectively. Fans of the novel are sure to enjoy this version whilst newcomers to the story are sure to be satisfied, too. The storyline adheres to the original plot: Zachary is a guardian angel to Miranda but oversteps the mark, in his attempt to save her life and the reults are drastic: Zachary loses his wings  and Miranda loses her soul by becoming a vampire! CanZachary still rescue her  or will his love for her get in the way, again? Zachary’s viewpoint is conveyed in an engaging manner (even if some of the humour of the original is modified a little).

The cover illustration captures the angelic qualities of our hero beautifully whilst Ming Doyle’s black and white illustrations do likewise, even if her Zachary is slightly different in appearance. Her style captures the action and pace of the novel and presents credible versions of humans, vampires and were creatures, too. Text boxes and dialogue clouds are non-intrusive and appropriate to the illustrations.

All in all, a great addition to the “Tantalize” series – sure to delight fans.  And if you enjoy this graphic novel, why not take a look at the original story in “Eternal”. Read a review on The Reading Room blog . Or check out the author’s website.

Highly Recommended (dma) *****
